I wrote about how to do this compositing of node tree over visuals in Pure Data using OBS some years ago Five Days of Pure Data – Live Coding | Antonio Roberts
The short answer is that you use OBS to do a window capture of both the Max/Pure Data patch window and the visual output, and then key out the patch background, leaving you with the nodes overlaid onto the visuals:
