What does the "d" stand for?

d1, d2, d3, d4, etc. -- when defining patterns, what does "d" stand for? "Definition"? I've read through the Tidal Cycle docs a few times and I must have missed it.

I know it's a dumb question but it's one of the first things people ask when I describe the notation format.

It stands for 'dirt' The original sampler used with tidal was just called 'dirt', superdirt came later.

Wow! Thank you for the deep lore. I never would have guessed that.
